Ensuring Social Diversity

Career manager and a student during a 20-minute mock interview

We play an active role in various initiatives to promote social diversity, often in partnership with public organizations and not-for-profit associations. We are especially involved in making sure that young people are not shut out of the job market because of their surname, nationality or ethnic origin.

Numerous Partnerships to Help Young People Find Jobs

Total sponsors initiatives carried out by the Employment and Diversity Center of IMS–Entreprendre pour la Cité and we participate in employment/diversity job fairs held specifically to facilitate face-to-face meetings with young minority graduates.

We are also involved in the work of three associations, Nos quartiers ont des talents, Proxité et Frateli, that help young graduates from disadvantaged backgrounds find jobs or offer support while they study at France’s elite universities. Company mentors help young people looking for work to prepare their résumés, get ready for interviews and access a network to facilitate their job search.

Total’s First Global Diversity Days, a Popular Success

More than 70 Total affiliates in 50 countries organized conferences, discussions and exhibitions to mark our first Global Diversity Days from May 23 to 27, 2011. The event stimulated employee awareness of diversity issues and gave Total affiliates and sites an opportunity to look at the topic from different angles, including seniors, disability and ethnic origin. Global Diversity Days will be a regular event on our calendar, held every two years.

A Pilot Program in French High Schools

Total is taking part in a pilot program initiated by the Institut d’Etudes Politiques at four French high schools in the Paris suburb of Seine-Saint-Denis.

We have contributed to the program by developing innovative projects such as:

  • Mentoring of high school students by employees.
  • Providing courses taught by Total managers.
  • Offering teachers the possibility of in-house training alongside Total managers.

A Partnership with French Middle Schools

Total has been a partner of the fondation Télémaque since early 2007.

Under the aegis of the Fondation de France and with the agreement of France’s Ministry of Education, the not-for-profit association helps partner businesses match interested employees with disadvantaged middle school students, to act as their coaches and mentors. The students selected are assigned two mentors and receive financial support in the form of merit grants. The employee volunteers work with a school resource person to help students define their personal and career goals.

La clé des champs, a Corporate Social Philanthropy Project in France

In early 2008, the Total Foundation and Total Refining & Marketing’s Central Works Council teamed up with the Versailles school board on a corporate social philanthropy project dubbed La clé des champs.

  • Developed jointly by employee representatives and Total’s senior management, the initiative allows schoolchildren from targeted school districts to use three vacation camps managed by the Central Works Council, except during school holidays.
  • In 2008, 800 primary school children from the Paris region attended camps in southwestern and central France and Brittany under the La clé des champs initiative. The total has risen to nearly 3,000 children over three years.
